Horseback Bird Watching Trek

Dart Valley, Glenorchy — 4.5 hours | 9:00am–1:30pm

Ride quietly into one of the last strongholds of New Zealand's rarest river birds. This guided horseback trek follows the Dart's braided riverbeds, home to five nationally threatened or endangered species that nest here and almost nowhere else — the black-fronted tern, black-billed gull, banded dotterel, wrybill, and South Island pied oystercatcher.

Small groups only (no more than 3 riders, unless booked privately) keep the experience close and quiet. Your guide reads the terrain and the birds' behaviour as carefully as the horses do — the same instinct that keeps a horse from crowding you is what keeps a nesting bird from taking flight.

Good to know:
Riders should be confident at a walk and trot, with prior riding experience (roughly 10+ rides). Sightings aren't guaranteed — this is a wild, working riverbed, not an aviary — but every sighting logged contributes to real conservation data shared with the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust. Trek timing and availability may shift with weather and river conditions.
