Retreats Where the Horse Leads the Way

A three-day natural horsemanship retreat from Lighthorse Adventures, set in New Zealand's Dart Valley. Mountains, rivers, soft snoots, and a small circle of people you'll carry with you long after you leave. Come as you are.

This is a horsemanship retreat, not a weekend away. Three days of guided natural horsemanship, nervous system work and movement, all designed to make you a more confident, safer and more connected rider, wherever you're starting from.

An invitation from your guide Tereza

Kia ora, I'm Tereza. I'm one of the guides at Lighthorse Adventures, and I'll be your host and guide for these three days.

I've spent my life learning from horses, and the biggest lesson they keep teaching me is this: we're all still students. No matter how long you've ridden, or whether you've ridden at all, the horse always has something new to show you about partnership, about listening, and about yourself.

At Lighthorse, that's what everything we do is built on. I'd love to share it with you here, with our herd, in the valley we call home.

Tereza, Lighthorse Adventures

No two retreats are ever the same

Every retreat is shaped by the people who arrive and the Lighthorse horses who meet them. A different group, a different pairing of horse and rider, a different season on the river: each combination creates something that has never happened before and won't happen again.

At the heart of Lighthorse is a simple belief: the horse is your partner, not your servant. We work on the principles of Natural Horsemanship along with bitless bridles on a loose rein, our horses move barefoot in hoof boots, and our contour saddles designed for the horses body, whilst being comfortable for the rider. Natural horsemanship here isn't a rigid system. It's a living philosophy of respect and understanding how horses think, communicate and respond, and it changes not just how you ride but how you listen.

Come as you are

You don't need to arrive fixed, ready, or certain. Bring your own story, your nerves, your hopes, whatever you have going on.

We meet you where you are and take you further on your journey. Progress doesn't look the same for everyone, and it doesn't need to. Some guests find their confidence in the saddle; others find it standing quietly beside a horse. Whatever your next level is, that's what we'll work towards together, at your own pace.

There's no finish line in horsemanship. We're all students of the horse, and every moment with them is a chance to learn something about life and about ourselves.

Connections that last beyond the valley

A small group, shared meals, long evenings by the fire. By the end of three days, the people you rode beside are no longer strangers.

RECLAIM YOUR CONFIDENCE

Learn to ride from presence, not pressure.

Sometimes it takes stepping away from the familiar to find what's real. Here, in the glacial valleys of New Zealand's South Island, something shifts when people meet horses with genuine presence.

Our aim is for your to leave with greater presence, trust and confidence built from the inside out, and with the horses, your guide and the people who you've connected with along the journey.
